Bird and Garden Diary - June

June 12 : I've finally had time to do some work in the garden, although it is beastly hot. I have pulled up huge amounts of giant weeds. I hope to get the veggies (and other things) planted this evening. Blooming now: rosebush, daisies, lamb's ears, osteospermum, foxglove, dianthus, carnations, Campanula Glomerata, Campanula "Pantaloons", and some baby's breath, alyssum, and other wildflowers I can't identify. The day lilies have buds, but I am wanting to transplant them up by the veggie garden. Hope that won't ruin them! Birds at the feeders today: house sparrows, chipping sparrows, house finches, goldfinches, downy woodpecker, rose-breasted grosbeak, mourning dove, red-winged blackbird, and ruby-throated hummingbirds.

June 24 : Finally finished planting the vegetable garden this weekend. Besides pulling up giant weeds, I decided the soil needed amending. I dug out lots of rocks and chunks of concrete while I was at it. I have 3 new tomatoes along with one volunteer, lots of volunteer sunflowers, 4 kale plants, 5 eggplants, 6 basil, 7 peppers, and 8 marigolds. I also planted seeds for green beans, beets, onions, borage, coriander, dill, and zinnias. Still need to move the daylilies.

I also got 5 mums planted, 8 lilies (one giant pink one is blooming!), and transplanted the "Blue Clips" Campanula. I went down the road to see Muoi and, of course, came home with more plants. I traded her some lamb's ears, and some "Pantaloons." Got rhubarb, hollyhocks, delphiniums (dwarf blue), some rare pink poppies (I hope they will take...), and some pink and white phlox.
