July 1 : I have a cardinal!!!!!! First one I've seen since I moved here. I've heard them occasionally, so knew they were around, but none had ever come to my feeders. The cardinal is my favorite bird, and has been for many years. I have been designing my garden with the object of attracting cardinals first and foremost. So I asked for the crabapple tree. And I got the sunflower feeder. And most recently the new combo feeder. Well, today I had a cardinal. It was either a female or a young male (not red yet.) First saw him at the birdbath taking a drink, and then he hung around the sunflower feeder for a good long time. I hope he will be a regular visitor now!
Did some more garden work this weekend : moved the yarrow, moved the daylilies, moved a hydrangea, moved the artemisia, and one of the sedums. Planted the bridal wreath spirea and the phlox. Got mulch put around the tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.
July 3 : A busy day. Rick and kids offered to help clear all the dirt off the sidewalk. They also planted 4 sandcherry bushes along the side yard. I finished weeding, planted the new campanulas, and mulched along my little fence.
July 31 : I'm back from a weeklong trip, and wow has everything grown. Especially the weeds - ha ha! I had finished the front walk before I left and planted seeds. I don't see much of anything coming up yet though. The sunflowers are now as tall as the feeder. The vegetable garden has grown by leaps and bounds. The butterfly bush and the beebalm have blooms. Yeah! Also one of the delphiniums is blooming. I have not seen the cardinal again. :-(

Congratulations on your cardinal visitor. It's my favorite bird too. We have lots of cardinals but they are pretty shy about coming to the feeders. I heard one sining at 4:00 this morning in the dark! My father lives an hour away and he'll have multiple cardinals at his feeder right outside of his living room window. You can watch all the birds just a few feet away. And they stay while we walk around the house. I have never been able to figure what he does that is different from me.
