Bird and Garden Diary - April

April 7 : We've had a week of freezing cold. Wind chills near zero. I believe it will be colder tonight than it was on Christmas Eve. The weatherman says it has been the coldest first week of April in 28 years. Saw a chipping sparrow today! I have been seeing a larger than usual woodpecker the past week or so, and have decided it is a hairy woodpecker. The downy woodpecker has also been busy at the suet feeder. The hairy woodpecker seems to like the peanut nuggets. There are more house finches today. Lots of juncos still around. At the feeders or in the yard today have been: house sparrows, house finches, chipping sparrow, starling, downy woodpecker, hairy woodpecker, juncos, mourning doves, robins. The daffodils coming up by the birdbath have buds. Most of the bulbs along the fence and around the birdbath are up. I have seen no bulbs along the front walk or front beds coming up yet. I tried to rearrange the poles for the birdfeeders but the ground is too frozen.

April 8 : Easter Sunday. Saw two hairy woodpeckers and two downy woodpeckers in the yard at the same time.

April 15 : After a week of rain I have gotten the poles rearranged for the birdfeeders.

April 17 : Temperatures now in the 60s during the day and above freezing at night. I cleaned up the porch and put out the pansies and herbs. Cleaned up the leaves on half of the front garden. I've seen a red-winged blackbird at the sunflower feeder, and a whole host of grackles are doing their posturing.

April 18 : I HAVE A GOLDFINCH!!! Yay! A male in mostly summer plumage. The juncos are still here. Still only one chipping sparrow.

April 21 : My first daffodil opens! A couple of tulips are almost blooming. Today is my one-year anniversary of moving in. There is a pair of goldfinches now, and lots of chipping sparrows. Only saw one junco. High temperature of 82. Some of the crocus around the lilacs are poking through. The lilacs have buds.
